Strange Week – Hello Friday

by halcyone

Hey look, its Friday and I haven’t posted since I whipped out two posts Monday morning.  That was impressive, and not just because one of those posts was of a significant length.  See, for those of you not living in Lost Angeles (I love writing it that way ever since I first typoed it, but I keep hesitating.  I am over the hesitation.  Deal with it.) we had a little heat wave last weekend.  It basically started on Sat, got worse on Sun (my birthday – sadface for me, but it was apparently part of the plan to keep me mostly immobile that day, so whatever) and then it peaked on Monday.  And when I say “peaked” I mean downtown LA (I live quite close to downtown LA) recorded it’s highest temperature ever.  As in, since they started measuring/tracking this data.  The thermometer they had hit 113 degrees Fahrenheit and broke.  So it is possible the temp climbed even higher.  We’ll never know (well, unless they come up with some crazy scientific way of figuring out exact temps on exact days in the past or something).  But that’s really not the point.

The point is HOT!  And not the good kind of hot.  As in “check out that hottie over there!” hot.  No, the point is, we ran our AC unit all day on Monday and thanks to less than ideal airflow my room was still overly warm.  And for those of you who don’t know me, I don’t like the heat.  I would like the heat to go away.  I tend to feel useless in the heat.  So, you see, getting two blog posts out of me that morning was half a miracle and probably only possible because I wrote them in the AM before the heat really started in ernest.  Although, it was already hot on account of the previous two days of heat wave.  And apparently between the knocking out two posts in one day and all that excess heat in the world I was done with posting for the rest of the week even though I have things to write/post about.  But enough about the misery of heat and it’s impact on me/this blog.  On to more interesting things…

Things like class on Tuesday… Remember last Friday?  With the very successful ass kicking exercise?  Yeah, well Tuesday was the one step back to Friday’s two steps forward.  It was a good exercise.  I had all lots of room to be more specific with my superlative activity (but I had tweaked it to be better than what I had originally planned on doing – I am at least paying some attention!).  And for some reason my specific relationship wasn’t particularly strong the first go round.  But hey, it was a learning experience and that is what I am there for.  Yay for learning!

Wednesday was spent trying to be productive while still hiding from the lingering heat (I did manage to get out and mail the cell phone I’ve been meaning to send to my sister for the past two and half weeks!  She’ll be so happy.) and culminated in a call from my mother.  She was calling from the hospital to let me know what was going on with my grandmother.  *Gulp*  We only just lost grandpa back in June.  This has been a hard year.  I am not ready for more death in my family (who is, right?).  Thankfully, while not exactly encouraging the prognosis is reasonably good and I’m hoping that a doctor who knows her better (her doctor) will actually have a more encouraging out look.  But who knows.  For now, what we know is that she as ovarian cancer and a large tumor that is pressing against her internal organs.  Due to her age and Alzheimer’s, she probably isn’t a good candidate for surgery.  However this cancer does tend to respond well to low level chemotherapy.  So, we await further diagnosis and such like.  Please send her some love and prayers, they will be welcome and appreciated.

And plunging onward (wiping away the tears – she’s my last living grandparent…).

What was I saying about onward?  Oh yes, plunging.

Yesterday was the first day of the week that temps were mostly decent.  And while I had gone out in pursuit of supplies late the night before, I had refrained from actually putting my “Primal Iron Chef” plans into motion until our apartment had another night to cool off.  This led to me actually relocating to a friend’s apartment/kitchen.  It’s a nice kitchen.  Much more spacious than my own.  And prettier.  I have to say, I wish I had used that aspect of it more, but it would have required more straightening and meddling with someone else’s kitchen than I was going to do at that time.  Not that the people in question give their kitchen much of work out, but still.  (No I am not plotting future take overs of this kitchen.  I pinky swear.)

So where was I?  Oh yes, concocting coconut primal dishes for the chance to win a VitaMix (wish me luck guys!).  I settled into the kitchen quickly and began what ended up being a very long process for putting together my two dishes.  This was not exactly by design & was entirely unnecessary, but I am just fine with how it all went down.  Thankfully it wasn’t totally down to the wire and I got my entry in with almost an hour to spare.  I am not going to rehash what I wrote up for the contest here.  I will either link to it if it gets posted over at marksdailyapple.com or post it in its entirety here in a few days.  And I will include an epilog!

So here it is, Friday morning again.  And I am starting to feel mostly human again.  The temps are at least bearable and my leg is mostly not gimpy (this has not been my month for walking.  I have joked a lot about working on impediments early – which is something we will be learning in class – but I really would rather not have the assistance on that one).   I’m seriously obsessing about my Primal Iron Chef entry.  The Primal Blueprint Challenge has been fun by the way.  Lots of fun contests and ideas and inspiration.  Now if only I would stop hurting myself so that I can get back to actually being able to exercise and such!

Yup, Friday morning and today holds lots of promise.  My aunt (and possibly/probably my uncle and their two kids) will be meeting me at the tar pits and for a picnic and taking me to LACMA in honor of my birthday.  This is reminding me a bit of last Friday.  When E’s family (mom and her mom’s cousin) was in town and E took me/us whale watching.  Which was entirely awesome, by the way, and will be getting it’s own post just as soon as I sit down, write it & steal video/photos of the event from E.  I’m hoping that picnic/museum visit is lovely and that I skip the injuring myself but do manage the kick butt in class thing again….

I’ll let you know.
